Pumpkin for Babies!

There's only so many pumpkin pies a person can eat! Looking for something else to do with all that left over  pumpkin!  Why not feed it to your baby!

Pumpkins contain some of the best nutritional compounds ever. They are highly loaded with Vitamin A and beta carotene. Beta Carotene is one of the plant carotenoids that when eaten and digested, turns into Vitamin A in the human body. Beta Carotene may reduce the risk of cancer as well as heart disease. It also may be responsible for combating or putting off the degenerative effects of ageing.  Pumpkins are also good sources of potassium, protein, and iron.

Halloween Safety Tips!

On a more serious note than our previous tampon crafts and Halloween fun, please be safe this Halloween! Here are a few tips to remember:

* Use reflective tape, glow sticks or flashing lights on your childs costume so that they will be easily seen in the dark.
* Ensure that costumes are not too long so that they don't trip up!
* Remind your children to stay away from open fires and candles.
* Use face paint rather than masks.
* Whenever possible, stay on side walks and cross at cross walks and remind children to look both ways before crossing the street, even at crosswalks.
* Bring along a small flash light each in case you encounter really dark areas or just need to be seen.
* If your children are old enough to trick or treat alone, have them share their route with you and encourage them to stick to that route.
* Always trick or treat in groups.
* Tell your children to NEVER enter a persons house or car, regardless of their offer of treats.
* Remind children that there is no snacking along the way, parents should inspect all treats for opened wrappers and other dangers.

This is non-edible (but still non toxic) smells like pumpkin pie so great for the kids during Thanksgiving or  Halloween.

5-1/2 cups flour

2 cups salt

8 teaspoons of cream of tartar

1 spice container of pumpkin pie spice (about 1-1/2 oz if buying in bulk)

4 cups water

In a large saucepan combine all ingredients. Cook over medium heat, stirring until all lumps are blended. Allow to cool then knead pumpking pie playdough on a lightly floured counter or table until it is smooth and of playdough consistency. Add small amounts of water or flour if needed. Healthy and fun school lunches

Well this is my first blog entry ever, so please be kind, lol.

With all of the talk of back to school and what to pack for lunches I thought I would focus my entry on that.

I am sure some of you may have picky eaters, or even non eaters, but lets face it, kids need to eat a well balanced diet in order to be alert for the day ahead. So make lunch fun, all kids love fun, right? Every couple of months I receive Kraft Canada Magazines, "What's Cooking". I love them. This month there was an insert with lunch ideas for kids, I thought I would share them with you.

Mini sub sandwiches
Roll 'n go tortillas
Layered lunchtime salad
Creamy and crunchy ham sandwich
Cinnamon raison fold over sandwiches
Baby bagel sandwiches

Let's Sing a Back to School Song!!

Twas the Night Before School Starts
By Ron Yorgason

T’was the night before school starts and all through the place,
Not a smile was seen On any kid’s face.
Our bags were all stuffed with our notebooks brand new,
And rulers and pencils with erasers to chew.

Mournfully we all crawled into bed,
Knowing too well that the ‘good life’ was dead.
Then mom came in whistling and kissed us goodnight,
With a bright cheery voice that didn’t seem right.

The night dragged on slowly I just couldn’t sleep,
For fear that my math teacher Would be a real creep.
Or maybe a bully would give a shove,
Or even more evil things than I could think of.

When from in the next room there arose such a clummer,
My mom yelled,”I’m FREE!, I’m free ‘til next summer!”
This must be a plot by conspiring moms,
Who just want a break to experience ‘calm.’

Oh, must I go through it? How can I go on?
I want to escape run off to Saigon!
Nine months is too long to suffer through school
The classes so rough and teachers who’re cruel.

“Come Donald! Come Conner! Come Henry VanStation!
Come up to the board, do your multiplication!”
“And Julie, stop talking! And Jimmy, wake up!
And, Mary, right now, Don’t do your makeup!”

Teachers ever are hounding they just never quit.
You do something wrong, they go into a fit.
And so every year about this same time,
I lie in bed sleepless and just moan and whine.

Until morning comes,
and I hear my mom say,
“Good luck with your school!
And have a nice day!”

Make it Easy!

Make life "easier" by following some of these tips!

We all know how hectic life can be once the kids return to school and the various extracurricular activities begin again! Here are some helpful tips to help us save on time, particularly during rushed times.

Before you go to bed do the following...
-> Make lunches for your entire family, add an ice pack in the morning and it's done!

-> Pack up homework, gym clothes and anything else required for the next day, do this for yourself as well.

-> Lay out clothes for yourself and your children.

-> Set the coffee maker, cut up fruit, and any other breakfast preparations that can be done ahead of time.

-> Ensure your pets have ample food and water.

-> Prepare a homework box with supplies similar to school, keep it out of reach so that it can only be used for homework time.

-> Have a family tidy-time for 10-30 minutes every night so that clutter cannot accumulate.

Time permitting, do some of the following...
-> Make freezable meals for evenings there is a time crunch.

-> Do laundry and/or ironing every couple of days to avoid the mountain on the weekend.

And most importantly, relax! Your children are children just once, enjoy it!!
